Hi everyone, it’s Dr. Holland from Castleton Orthodontics and today I’m speaking to you about expanders. What are they and why do we need them? When we talk about expanders, we are talking about the upper teeth. When the upper teeth are too narrow compared to the bottom teeth, this leads to excessive wear of the molar teeth, excessive crowding of the upper teeth and this is a phenomenon often seen in people who have nighttime airway obstruction. And so an expander is simply an appliance that widens the upper arch of teeth. It may look scary at first, but it actually widens very slowly – only one quarter of a millimeter per day. The discomfort your child may experience is nothing that can’t be remedied with some ibuprofen and ice cream! The best time to do an expander is between 8-10 years of age. This is when the upper jaw is most malleable. If it looks like your child is developing with a narrow upper jaw, bring them into Castleton Orthodontics for a free examination!
I’d like to send a big thank you to Lee Mitchell for helping me with this video design!
